What Should My Baby Be Drinking?
Breast milk or formula is the only beverage your baby needs to be drinking. Cow’s milk should not be introduced before the first birthday because it does not contain proper and sufficient nutrition for an infant. It has higher concentrations of protein and minerals, which infants are unable to digest.
You can introduce water from a cup between 6 and 8 months. It’s important that baby develop this habit and taste early on so that she can learn to like it. There is no need for sugar-sweetened beverages of any kind. Some parents and cultures offer weak tea to their babies for a variety of reasons, but this practice is not recommended by many professional organizations. Always check with your health care provider before offering your baby anything other than breast milk, formula, or water to drink.
